Hi Friends!
If you've been following this blog (I know I'm posting super often and it's hard to keep up), you've learned how the pieces move and some basics in Chess Intro, how to beat the most common beginner's opening in Scholar's Mate? Think Again!, and how to mate with some common combos of pieces in Chess Endgames 101. The next step in your chess learning with me is how to set yourself up for success in the opening phase of the game.
The three major principles the video below will highlight are:
Develop your minor pieces (knights and bishops)
Control the center
Castle your king
Before I let you go, here are some general things NOT to do in the opening:
Do NOT bring your queen out too early
Do NOT move the same piece over and over
Do NOT make too many pawn moves
You're also at a place in your chess journey now where you need to get your reps in. Check out chess.com for example to play some beginner bots to continue your learning and practice what you've learned or if you're feeling brave, play a real-life opponent! You can do it!
