Fantasy Football Draft Strats

It's football season again! NFL teams are doing training camp, preseason games have begun (shoutout Panthers and Cardinals for a great opener), and fantasy football drafts are happening constantly! We just returned from the US Open Chess Championship in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which was a great experience I will cover in a future blog soon. Today, we're going to discuss my top-secret fantasy football draft strategies, which have led me to playoffs consistently and to numerous championships over the past several seasons.

QB: For the upcoming season, if Josh Allen is available in round 3/4, I could see deviating from my usual strats to get him. He's been a top two fantasy quarterback in each of the last six seasons and there's no reason his stats should drop off, and he hasn't missed a start his entire career. Otherwise, I would wait to draft a QB until round 6 at the earliest.

RB: This season, after round 5, consistent strong running backs are hard to come by. I would recommend drafting 2-3 RBs in rounds 1-5. I'm a fan of a lot of the younger guys with high projected carries like Jeremiyah Love, Ashton Jeanty, Omarion Hampton, etc.

WR: Consider taking your starting WRs in rounds 1 and 5/6. The top end WRs are insanely good, like Ja'Marr Chase, Amon Ra St. Brown, Cee Dee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, Puka Nacua, and Jaxon Smith Njigba. After that there's a HUGE dropoff at tier two BUT wide receivers are the deepest position this year, so rest assured you will get great value picks in rounds 5 onward.

TE: Tight Ends are stronger than ever in fantasy this year. Brock Bowers or Trey McBride are worth the high cost of an early round pick but if you can't get one, you'll find great value at any round. Examples of later round reliable TEs include Harold Fannin Jr., Sam La Porta, Dallas Goedert, etc.

Defense/Kicker: WAIT. That's it. There's no reason to draft a Defense or Kicker in Fantasy until the end of the draft. With all due respect to the Texans, Broncos, Seahawks, etc. and Aubrey, Dicker, Little, etc. the value add relative to the round cost just isn't there.

With all this in mind, here's my mock draft strategy for you to try out. Good luck!

1. In round 1, take a WR.

2. In round 2, take a RB.

3. In round 3, take a RB, unless Josh Allen, Brock Bowers, or Trey McBride is available.

4. In round 4, take a FLEX, i.e. RB, WR, or TE. Use best available, or ADP (average draft position) as a guide if you're unsure.

5. In round 5, take a FLEX, but probably a good RB like TreVeyon Henderson or Jadarian Price, especially if you only have 1 or 2 at this point.

6. In round 6, take a FLEX, but probably a WR/TE.

Note by the end of round 6, you should ideally have 2 RBs, 2 WRs, an additional RB/WR and either a TE or a QB.

Between rounds 7 and 10, take a QB if you didn't get Josh Allen. Guys to consider are Jaxson Dart, Trevor Lawrence, Dak Prescott, Bo Nix, or Patrick Mahomes.

From here, you basically go with the flow, get the positions you need, and trust ADP and needs. D and K can come later. Fill your bench and make sure you have at least 1-2 RBs and WRs available on your bench and at least 1 QB and 1 TE. Keep an eye on bye weeks as well because you want to make sure your bench players are available when your starters are on bye. If you want a little supergraphic for quick sharing, here ya go!
