English Premier League Week 1 Recap and Season Preview

The English Premier League (EPL) started this week and there's already been a ton of great action! Let's recap week one and preview the season to come. The league began when newly promoted Coventry took their talents to northern London to face off against the defending champions, Arsenal. Arsenal looked great early on with goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka to go up 2-0 before the 25th minute, then midfielder Martin Odegaard sealed the deal shortly after halftime to secure the win 3-0. They looked really good on the attack and there is a very good chance they repeat.

Then it was Manchester United, arguably the best Premier League team in history, winning 13 titles since 1992, heading east to MKM Stadium to take on newly promoted Hull City. Hull, the home team, shocked the world and beat a juggernaut 2-0 after a crazy first half where Hull scored two goals from Semi Ajayi in the 17th and Nobel Mendy in the 38th, which ultimately dictated the outcome. United stopped the attack very well after the break, but the offense wasn’t good enough which gave Hull the win.

Crystal Palace then traveled to downtown Liverpool to play against Everton, who won 2-0 in a solid victory. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall started the cheers at Hill Dickinson Stadium right before the break, then a header from Thierno Barry doubled Everton’s score to seal the win.

Leeds United traveled south to play against Nottingham Forest next. Nottingham attacked in the second half with many chances, but it was Anton Stach of Leeds who drove a free kick into the goal in the 88th minute to secure a late 1-0 away win.

Ipswich Town then won a sensational one 2-1 in front of their home fans against visiting Sunderland FC thanks to a late Jack Clarke goal in the 90th minute! Before that, Emersonn Da Silva of Ipswich scored in the 24th before Nilson Angulo equalized in the 39th.

To end off the day, Brentford took a nice 3-0 home win over Tottenham, with early goals in the 12th, 33rd and 49th, sealing the deal.

Brighton had a dominant home win over Aston Villa 4-0, fueled by an own goal and a goal from Maxim de Cuyper, before keeping up the pressure with a Jack Hinshelwood brace in BACK TO BACK minutes! Joao Gomes got a red card in the 40th minute for Aston Villa, leaving the visitors not able to put any pressure on the home side.

Top team Manchester City pulled an Argentina and completed a late comeback at home against Bournemouth, who scored an early goal by Marcus Tavernier. Marc Guehi and Josko Gvardiol scored goals later, giving the home squad three points.

Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai made a penalty kick at the last minute to give my favorite team, Liverpool, a thrilling 2-2 draw against Newcastle United! This was a very good battle with relentless attacking football from both sides.

To end the week, Chelsea edged out Fulham in an away win. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro led the attack with a goal and assist each, withstanding Fulham’s 2 goals.

Whew! That was a whirlwind. Now let's talk predictions.

First, please note that my Tier list above is not ranked within each Tier. For example, I have Man City finishing second in EPL this season and almost put them in the S tier with defending champs Arsenal but felt they aren't quite as strong. I expect Man United and Liverpool to round out the top four, but after Brighton's performance against Aston Villa, who finished fourth last year making the UEFA Champions League, I've bumped them into my A tier. As for Chelsea, they've made some really good signings, and I anticipate them to be in the mix for Champions League.

The B tier features teams I expect to have a winning record but likely won't factor into the Champions League picture. Everton is a new entry here for me but everything seems to be heading in the right direction for that organization, from a new stadium to some strong signings. As for the C tier, I may have been a bit harsh on Newcastle and a bit high on the newly promoted Hull, but I stand by the list. I think Sunderland may be the strongest in the D tier but they've lost a lot of strong players, and I don't expect anywhere near their epic 7th place showing from last year. As for relegation, I think Coventry, Nottingham, and Ipswich get relegated. As for who gets in, fingers crossed for Wrexham, another place I got to visit!

Now let's talk about Arsenal. I may be a Liverpool fan first and Man City fan second, but Arsenal deserves their own tier. They're the defending champs, they made the finals of the Champions League (losing to PSG in their 2-peat), and I expect them to actually win the Champions League this year in addition to defending their Premier League title. I believe they have the best offense in the world. Also, hot take, David Raya may not have started for Spain in their World Cup title but I believe he's the best goalkeeper not only in the Prem but in the world. The midfield and defense are strong as well and I just don't see any real weaknesses with this team.
